The Telica volcano is one of the most active and impressive volcanoes in Nicaragua. With its constantly smoking crater, it’s a fascinating destination for adventurous backpackers and hiking enthusiasts. If you enjoy getting off the beaten track and experiencing nature on your own, then the hike to Telica is perfect for you. Here’s everything you need to know to tackle the hike independently.
While the hike is also available as a guided tour, we believe it’s completely feasible on your own. Just make sure to follow the route shown on Maps.me, especially in the first half of the hike, to avoid getting off track.
Arrival at the Starting Point
You have a long and challenging day ahead, so we recommend starting early in the morning – around 7 am. Head to the bus station in León and catch a bus or colectivo to San Jacinto. Buses run frequently, so just ask around at the station; locals will be happy to help. The journey takes around 30 minutes and costs about 35 Cordobas (roughly 0.90 euros) per person.
Make sure to inform the bus driver that you’re hiking to Telica and want to get off in Santa Clara. Just say, “Voy a hacer una caminata al volcán Telica,” and the driver will drop you off at the right spot – just after Santa Clara, near a bridge.
Note: The bus doesn’t always stop at fixed points, so be sure to tell the driver well in advance. The bus fare is typically only about 15 Cordobas (less than 1 USD).
The Hike to Telica Volcano
The hike to Telica is an exciting adventure! You’ll cover 22 kilometers – 11 kilometers each way – and should plan for around 8 hours in total. The first part of the hike is fairly flat and mostly shaded, following a dry riverbed. As you continue, the terrain becomes steeper, and the sun will test your endurance. Make sure to bring plenty of water – about 4 liters – as the heat can be exhausting.
As you approach the crater, the massive smoking mouth of the volcano becomes visible from a distance. Just before reaching the top, we encountered a man who charged a 100 Cordoba (roughly 2.20 euros) entrance fee per person. We weren’t sure if this fee was official, but after hearing about it beforehand, we didn’t argue. He also sold cold drinks, which we gladly accepted and enjoyed after reaching the summit.

On the Crater Rim of Telica
The real highlight of the hike comes when you reach the rim of the Telica crater. The sight of the smoking crater will take your breath away. Depending on the wind, you might catch the scent of sulfur, but it usually stays at a distance, allowing you to enjoy the view without discomfort.

Visit the Bat Cave
For a little extra adventure, check out the hidden Bat Cave. It’s easy to find using Maps.me and is located just a few hundred meters from the crater rim. If you venture inside, expect to be surrounded by a few bats – a thrilling experience to cap off your hike!

Equipment and Preparation
As you’re tackling this hike on your own, it’s crucial to be well-prepared. Here are some tips on what to bring:
- Water: At least 3 to 4 liters per person, as there are no water sources along the route.
- Snacks and Food: Bring enough food to keep your energy up, such as energy bars, fruit, or sandwiches.
- Good Footwear: Sturdy hiking boots are essential since the path can be rocky and slippery in places.
- Sun Protection: A hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses are important, as there’s little shade especially on the second half of the trail.
- Map or GPS: The trail is not officially marked, so a GPS or offline map (like Maps.me) is helpful to avoid getting lost.
The Way Back to León
Once you’ve soaked in the breathtaking views, it’s time to head back. The descent takes around 3 to 4 hours, depending on your pace, so be sure to allow enough time for the return journey.
Back in Santa Clara, you can catch a „chicken bus“ back to León. The ride costs around 15 Cordobas (less than 1 USD). These buses run regularly, but be prepared to wait a little for the next one to arrive.
Important Safety Information
- Hiking Experience: The hike to Telica is demanding and should only be attempted by hikers who have experience with long, challenging routes.
- Volcanic Activity: Since Telica is an active volcano, it’s essential to check the current volcanic activity before you go. Local hostels or travel guides can provide you with up-to-date information.
Conclusion
Hiking to Telica Volcano on your own is a unique way to experience one of Nicaragua’s most spectacular natural wonders up close. With the right preparation and equipment, you can embark on this adventure without the need for a guide. It’s a challenging hike, but well worth the effort – especially when you reach the summit and take in the incredible view of the crater. Who knows, you might even get lucky and witness a volcanic eruption or glowing lava! Pack your backpack and get ready for an unforgettable adventure.
