The journey to Somoto Canyon from León is an adventure in itself, embodying the true spirit of backpacking in Nicaragua. While you can book a guided full-day tour from León (around 140 USD, 5 am to 9 pm), it’s only worth considering if you’re really pressed for time.
For a more authentic and budget-friendly experience, we recommend taking public transport. It’s cheaper and gives you a genuine taste of local life. The trip from León to Somoto takes roughly 6 hours, which may sound long, but it’s easy and only requires one bus change.
1. León to Estelí:
Your adventure starts with a minibus or colectivo from León to Estelí. Expect to pay around 105-120 Cordobas (roughly 3-4 USD). If you’re traveling with a large backpack, a small surcharge may apply. The ride takes about 3 hours, depending on bus availability. Buses depart every hour, but the journey ends at the Cotran Norte bus terminal in Estelí, where you’ll catch your next bus to Somoto.
2. Estelí to Somoto:
From Estelí, hop on a chicken bus to Somoto. These buses leave every half hour and the journey takes around 2 hours. The fare is about 46 Cordobas (around 1.50 USD). As you head north through the hilly terrain, the bus can get packed in the afternoon – if you’re lucky, you might even score a seat.

You can easily book your tour in advance via WhatsApp. Providers‘ contact details can be found on Google Maps, or you can book locally through your accommodation in Somoto.
Is it Necessary to Stay Overnight in Somoto?
Not necessarily! You have two options for your overnight stay: either in Estelí or in Somoto.
If you prefer to sleep in Somoto, you can rest up and tackle your canyon tour the following day.
Alternatively, you can stay in Estelí and take the first bus to Somoto in the morning. Your tour guide will meet you at the bus station. After your tour, you can choose to stay in Somoto or head back to Estelí in the afternoon, continuing your travels from there.
